Chinese Opera

A Universe of Life on a Square Stage

Chinese opera is a highly integrated performing art combining singing, speech, acting, acrobatics, and dance, complemented by exquisite costumes, makeup (face painting), and music. It is not merely entertainment but also a vehicle for moral edification, historical storytelling, and aesthetic education.

Appreciating a Spectrum of Regional Styles

Cantonese Opera

The most representative opera form in Hong Kong, featuring rich and varied vocal styles (e.g., bangzi, erhuang, xiaoqu), relatable language, refined acting, and lavish costumes. Its "Red Boat" history is closely intertwined with local cultural development.

Peking Opera

Revered as the "National Opera", it features highly stylised performances, vigorous and soaring vocals, and colourful, symbolic face patterns. Role types (Sheng, Dan, Jing, Mo, Chou) are clearly defined.

Kunqu Opera

Hailed as the "Ancestor of All Operas", it is known for its elegant libretti, mellifluous and delicate singing, and fluid, dance-like movements. It was listed among the first UNESCO "Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity" in 2001.

Yue Opera

Originating in Zhejiang, it is characterised by female performers playing male lead roles (xiaosheng). Its singing is soft and lyrical, excelling in tales of scholars and beauties.

Sichuan Opera

Famous for the breathtaking "Face-Changing" skill. Other spectacular feats like "Fire-Spitting" and "Knife-Hiding" are also highly visual, and its style is often humorous.
